Armed with assault rifles, Second Amendment supporters march near University of Texas calling for an end to “gun-free” zones

In an attempt to demonstrate the danger of “gun-free” zones, Second Amendment supporters gathered in Austin, Texas, on Saturday before performing an open carry march near the University of Texas campus and staged a mock shooting.

The open carry marchers descended on what’s referred to as the “drag,” an area adjacent to campus consisting of restaurants, bars, smoke shops and book stores largely frequented by UT students. A student reporter for the local and very liberal Austin Chronicle called the event a “bad PR move.”

However, the gun rights groups behind the event, Don’t Comply and Come and Take It Texas, insist their march and demonstration was 100 percent necessary in order to bring awareness to the dangers of “gun-free” zones.

Beginning January 1, 2016, individuals with concealed handgun licenses (CHL) will be able to open carry. In Aug. 2016, CHL holders will be able to open carry inside UT classrooms and other campus buildings, whereas before they were only permitted to open carry on campus, reported Natural News.

Alex Samuels, a Breaking News Correspondent for USA Today’s college edition, said she felt uneasy about the new campus carry law

“As a student, part of me doesn’t feel safe,” said Samuels. “So, it’s kind of weird knowing that someone could have a gun on them, but at the same time it’s interesting to see how it will affect students next year.”

When asked by our reporters what she felt was the best line of defense against mass school shootings, Samuels admitted it was a “good question,” but didn’t have an answer. The Austin Chronicle reporter, who is a senior at UT and goes by the first name of “Matt,” said he didn’t think mass school shootings were a threat.

“I think there’s a much greater chance of accidental shootings,” he said.

“We’re debating things like our very personal religious beliefs, political beliefs, and oh yeah, this guy who also might get upset has a gun on him. I don’t think the threat of mass school shootings, while uncomfortable and while terrible, I don’t think it’s necessary to take the potential risk of guns on campus.”

When our reporters asked Matt if it was possible that school shootings are less common in Texas given the general pro-gun attitude, he replied: “I’m not going to comment on that. But that is interesting and is one of the comparisons they keep saying is Houston compared to Chicago. “

Gun-rights activists gather in Austin

Gun-rights activists from various parts of Texas attended the event in support of ending “gun-free” zones. We’re here “standing up for our Second Amendment rights,” said Jason Mosley, who traveled to Austin from Dallas to attend the march. We want to “make sure everybody knows that nobody’s down here to hurt anybody,” he added. “‘Gun-free’ is an open zone, that’s where people go to commit these outrageous crimes,” Mosley said.

The organizers behind the event concurred.

“We’re gathering to help end gun free zones [because] they’re dangerous areas where only the good people are disarmed,” said Murdoch Pizgatti, president and co-founder of Don’t Comply. “The bad people don’t obey the laws and a sign does not stop them from entering. They’re able to come in, into this target-rich environment and take people out at their leisure,” he added.

“It’s usually over within four minutes [a mass shooting], whereas police take an average of 10-12 minutes to get there,” said Murdoch, who is also a co-host for the Don’t Comply Show, a hard-hitting news show mixed with satirical comedy that airs on TalkNetwork Monday and Thursday 4–6 p.m. CT.

“Also, when they get there, they’re going to sit around and wait for reinforcements. Wait for the SWAT. Then, we’ve got a couple hours while the criminals are allowed to run amuck inside of a building or on a school campus.”

Gun-free zones are essentially a bad spot to be in whenever a mass shooter shows up, added Murdoch.

“Whenever the criminals think that people could possibly be armed in an area, it makes them think twice, it makes them go to a different area, pick a different target. That’s why we see places like Chicago have such a soar in crime, because they know people aren’t going to be armed. It’s kind of like taking candy from a baby at that point.”
